The Vision for New Rochdale Press is, first and foremost, to make a contribution to the field of Co-operative Studies. These books bring together the voice, insights an experience of academics, researchers and practitioners, many of them deeply involved in co-operatives and with interests in various aspects of co-operative activity. These publications are an effort to relate theory to practice, to suggest issues and events that need further discussion, to encourage examination of Co-operative Studies’ themes within educational institutions, to inform public policy decisions and to provide information and resources useful to anyone interested in knowing more about co-ops and what makes them tick. The topics covered by New Rochdale Press books reflect historical, theoretical and practical aspects in the life of co-operatives and the local, national and international movement overall.

Effective Practices in Developing Co-operativesDeveloping co-operatives can be a challenging task. Every step and every decision can be surrounded with questions and an array of options. The Effective Practices series of publications from New Rochdale Press is designed to guide those who endeavour to take on, or support, this collaborative adventure. In this series, we do not provide uniform answers – as no two co-ops are exactly alike – here you will find information to help co-operators make informed choices. In these publications we have documented the insights and experience of other co-operators and co-op developers on how to optimise the use of time and resources, and how to best design the internal structures of the co-op, to create successful and vibrant enterprises. British Columbia and the Canadian Co-op MovementFor over a century, co-operatives and credit unions have been an intricate dimension in the fabric of many rural and urban communities throughout Canada. Their impact on the social and economic landscape of the country, however, has only been superficially explored. Yet co-ops are flourishing and they are continually being adapted to a wide array of circumstances as a way of responding to changing societal conditions and as a means for people to have greater control over their destiny. Books in this series on the co-operative movement in British Columbia and Canada reflect historical developments, provide in-depth exploration of co-operatives in communities of British Columbia, and pick-up on some of the major themes in the development of the Canadian Co-operative Movement.
